Beer of the Week, January 7, 2021

Our Bottlecraft North Park manager, Gene, selects his favorite beer of the week. You can stay up to date on our beer shop favorites through our news feed and also through our Instagram.

  1. Burgeon | Modern Times Ultra Linear | Double Dry-hopped Hazy IPA (7%)

Brewed at Burgeon Beer Co. but displaying graphic-design influence from Modern Times Beer, this beer has not been distributed in cans since June 2019 (which honestly feels like a lifetime ago). With a heavy hit of Citra (both whole-cone and Cryo) as well as tropical favorites Galaxy and Strata, this limited-release hazy IPA is a welcome sight in the New Year.

  2. Humble Sea The Real DDH | Helles-style Lager (4.9%)

Though hazy IPAs, punning titles and cartoony iconography define their style, the brewers at Humble Sea Brewing in Santa Cruz clearly have a soft spot for lagers, as well. Almost as a rejoinder to the terminological abbreviation “DDH” for “double dry-hopped” (which they, themselves, make ample use of), the letters in this case stand for “double decocted helles”. In brief, double decoction is a method in lager production common in traditional Czech and Bavarian brewing traditions, which imparts a rounded cooked-cereal malt character. Devotees insist that it makes for a more flavorful and texturally pleasing beer. Readers will have to decide for themselves!

  3. Jester King SPON Grapefruit 2020 | Spontaneously Fermented Ale (5.6%)

Jester King has been at the vanguard of farmhouse ales (both clean and mixed-fermentation) in the American South for many years now. Their SPON series goes one further, inspired by true Pajottenland lambic – spontaneously fermented, oak-aged for years and meticulously blended. From the outset, the various incarnations of SPON could only be sourced at their sprawling headquarters outside of Austin, yet, recently, bottles have been leaking out into their distribution footprint in tiny amounts. This iteration is a three-year blend with Texas-grown grapefruit thrown into the mix of a dose of spritzy citric acidity. NOTE: This beer is only available at Bottlecraft’s Little Italy and North Park locations.
