Gene's Picks of The Week 8/23/21
1) Riip - Dankster Squad
West Coast IPA, 7%
Based in Huntington Beach, Riip Beer Company has quietly been supplying Orange County and the greater Los Angeles area with spectacular West Coast IPAs for a few years now. Only a few collaborative beers (typically brewed and canned off at partner breweries) have filtered their way down to San Diego in that time. Dankster Squad thus represents the very first Riip beer on our shelves solely emanating from the fountainhead. Focused and direct, with Simcoe and Mosaic at the forefront over a straightforward 7% malt-base, this is a treat for local hopheads.
2) Sierra Nevada - Oktoberfest
Few breweries founded in the 1980s have both remained independent and still command universal respect. Sierra Nevada is a legend of the craft-beer world, influencing the very warp and weft of the industry over the decades. Their perennial Festbier release is a recurring highlight as late summer slouches into autumn. Incredibly, they do not tend to repeat recipes from year to year, and for a time were alternating between expressions of the Wies'n style - lighter in coloration - and the more classic Märzen amber lager. In 2021 we have been graced with the latter, offering toasty and faintly caramel notes leading into an off-dry finish.
3) Cellador - Chenille
Mixed-Fermentation Saison, 7.6%
Kevin and Sara Osborne of Cellador have dramatically expanded their canning-runs since the summer commenced, with more of their specialty funky and tart beers finding their way into distribution in that format. Chenille is a rotating-fruit series that changes with the seasons - what better autumnal example to showcase than apples? Truly a beer-cider hybrid, this iteration of Chenille blends the must of apples with the wort of saison and ages the resulting concoction among the rafters of oak barrels located at their North Hills facility.
