I get questions - and complaints - about not allowing kids in our bar all the time, so I wanted to take a moment to clarify the situation more fully.
Our Little Italy, Sorrento Valley and Solana Beach locations were determined by the Department of Alcohol Beverage Control to be "bars" and are registered to only allow adults over 21 years of age inside. This unfortunately also applies to infants, kids sleeping, teenagers playing on phones, etc. It’s black and white in the eyes of the ABC and Police - “under 21” means anyone under 21 years. We would love to change this but it's very complicated, if not impossible, to change how we are registered because once the ABC determines a license, they rarely change it. Therefore if we have anyone under the age of 21 at our "bar" locations we could be suspended and/or shut down. It really sucks because a ton of our customers are parents and would love to swing by with the kids but we just have to act according to the ABC.
“But can’t you just change your license to allow kids?”
No. The process of changing a license is extremely complicated. At our Little Italy location, we don't have a kitchen and cannot just apply to make the space all ages unless we built a fully functional kitchen - which would be awesome but we do not have the capacity in our small space.
“What about Ballast Point/Bolt Brewing/etc? They allow kids.”
Both Ballast Point and Bolt Brewery are restaurants with dedicated kitchens and food, this allows them to operate under an all-ages restaurant license. At Bottlecraft, we don't have a kitchen and cannot just apply to make the space all ages unless we built a fully functional kitchen - which would be awesome but we do not have the capacity in our small space. Our North Park and Liberty Station locations actually operate under those licenses, so they can legally have kids inside, but our Little italy location is strictly for adults over 21.
Hope this clarifies things. We just need to abide by the laws to protect the business from getting shut down. I invite you to our North Park and Liberty Station shops, which are all ages since they are registered as restaurants.
